    United Kingdom’s first recycled kitchen

    recycled_kitchen.jpg
A lot of items are used by us daily because we just can live without them. For example if you love yoghurt and you are the kind of person who would love to have one daily with your lunch, you could end up contributing more than 250 of them a year to landfills and most of that is really unnecessary. Because of this, several companies are now looking into ways of diligently taking care of this problem. Milestone’s Kitchen is a very good example of this because it boasts itself as the first kitchen to be made entirely from recyclable materials.

Stylish lamp created from recycled Epson boxes

    Epson_ink_cartridge_lamps.jpg
Don’t we just love it when we can recycle our old geeky stuff to create something funky. Some geeks have put empty Epson boxes to good use and created a lamp out of it. This lamp emits a warm colorful glow around it. For a lamp made from recycled stuff, it is rather expensive at $350. You can get inspired from this and make one of your own instead.

Sanyo’s Rain Water Purification/Sterilization System saves energy

    rain_water.jpg
Sanyo announced the development of a system using its original ozonation technology for purifying, sterilizing, and effectively utilizing rain water saved in a tank. By sprinkling purified/sterilized rainwater on places like a rooftop or on the outdoor units of showcases and air conditioners, heat penetration into a building can be reduced and the operating efficiency of the outdoor units can be improved. This system can save energy, especially in summer, and help reduce electricity expense. Rain water, which runs through a gutter from the roof, is captured in a water storage tank. Then, the rain water is purified and sterilized by the purification unit connected to the water storage tank. The purified rain water is conveyed by a water pump to wherever watering is needed (rooftop, outdoor unit, etc.) and sprinkled or sprayed. When there is not enough rain water, makeup water may be used.

Eco friendly hotels using recycled grease, green roofs and geothermal heating

hotel_indigo.jpg I always preach – if you have the money, use it wisely and for relevance. A few hotels have shown that they are making huge efforts to save the earth and it is an example for others to follow. Hotel Indigo became the first LEED certified hotel in San Diego by introducing their green roofs. The hotel, part of the IHG group, features green roofs on the ninth and twelfth floors, a terrace bar with decking made from recycled plastic and wood fibers, a recycling and composting program, and preferential parking for fuel efficient vehicles. The hotel also has nature themed art and photography. The Comfort Inn becomes the first green hotel in Augusta using a geothermal heating system and 40% of the hotel’s electricity generated by solar panels on the roof. The hotel also features low flow faucets, low energy lights and infrared sensors which can alert frontdesk staff when lights are left on in empty rooms.

Japanese companies lure women to recycle bras

bra_recycling.jpg Japan’s so cool – they come up with the craziest ideas and actually publicize them. The latest eco campaign is by Wacoal, a leading manufacturer of ladies underwear. It seems, they will be recycling bras. No, they won’t be reselling used ones to others! They just asked some ladies who shop to drop their unwanted bras in a bag and eventually collected around 35,900 pieces and hooked them together and now they go a length of three times that of the height of Mt Everest and weigh 3.59 tons. Another company Triumph didn’t want to lag behind so they thought of giving out 50-yen postage stamps per bag as a token of appreciation. The collected bras are processed and recycled into solid fuel.

Biodegradable, Recyclable, Compostable bottles by Aquamantra

    aquamantra.jpg
The one thing that folks carry with them during travelling is mineral water bottles. No one can trust tap water anywhere and so for years the amount of toxic that has been accumulating from these bottles would have been phenomenal. Somebody took notice and now the Southern California company Aquamantra Premium Bottled Water is bringing to market a water bottle that completely biodegrades into organic material within 250 days. They have introduced the world’s first 100% Biodegradable, Recyclable, Compostable (non-PLA) Plastic Bottle. According to their statement, the ENSO bottles are FDA approved PET 1 bottles that are not made of cornstarch or oxo-degradable and if they bottles end up in microbial landfills, the bottles will break down within 10 months into inert biomass and biogas through either an anaerobic (no oxygen, no light) or aerobic decomposition.
