  • Fuel cells sans platinum promises affordable green energy

Fuel cells are an expensive green alternative to the internal combustion machines for the auto-industry. Though they can produce water and electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, it’s the essential presence of platinum that makes them unaffordable for mass production. Playing the role of a catalyst, platinum has so far been the metal of choice because of its ability to create acidic environment and non-corrosive nature. To defeat this precious metal’s reign, Lin Zhuang’s team at Wuhan University, China, has come up with a new alkali (non-acidic) nickel membrane that serves as a much cheaper catalyst.

Along with being easy on environment, such eco-friendly vests are undemanding on the economy too. While the traditional life saver can run up to ¥5,000 ($55) – ¥20,000 ($220), this recycled one costs ¥200 ($2). The Takamatsu Coast Guard Office has placed these lifesavers at three breakwaters in Kagawa Prefecture popular for fishing.

For $46 million, Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) flaunts a modified colossal green Science Building that spreads over 174,000 square feet. This is part of a national trend to go green in campus architecture. Designed to have more healthful interiors, take advantage of natural light, use recycled materials and conserve energy and water, this educational structure follows the adage, “Practice before you preach” with a green flair. The offices and classrooms ring the building’s outer rim to take advantage of natural light while the furniture inside is locally made from recycled materials. Water is conserved as pipes carry recycled water and water-free urinals are eco-friendly.

Most of us are harping about the solar power and its advantages in today’s day and age. Do you think the current generation is brighter (than their ancestors) as they are resorting to the sun’s energy for powering up almost everything under the sun? Nah! it is reported that almost 150 years ago, in1861 Auguste Mouchout developed the first steam engine powered entirely by the solar energy. And about a centaury ago, in 1913, European scientist experimented on the first solar power plant in the world in Maadi, Egypt. It was in operation for less than a year but has disappeared from history since then. At present, sand and houses cover the former location in Maadi, south of Cairo.

Work on muscles to charge up the GettaGrip Musclephone

    GettaGrip_Musclephone.jpg
All I can say about this gadget is that it will help to build up your fore arm muscles as you charge your cell phone. Since there isn’t much information about this GettaGrip Musclephone, I want to play safe with its description. Going by the image, I think it’s a concept phone designed by some eco-designer. Packing a lithium-ion battery inside, this gadget gets its juice by squeezing the grooved edges on the sides.Aptly contoured to fit between the fingers, the user just needs to apply pressure for forty seconds at a stretch for a full charge up. Wonder how that much can be enough to run the can-do-without gadget for hours at a stretch. Also dainty fingers will not be able to charge their Musclephone for non-stop yakking. Sincerely, such eco-friednly cellphones aren’t welcome as we can do with better options like the solar powered ones.
