IBM’s new water-cooled Supercomputer aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 85%

    ibm_water-cooled_supercomputer.jpg
Apart from manufacturing and selling computer hardware and software, IBM also intends to roll out green technology solutions to cut CO2 emissions. The world’s largest computer company has partnered with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich for energy-aware computing. The outcome, dubbed as Aquasar, is a first-of-a-kind water-cooled supercomputer that will directly repurpose excess heat for the university buildings. Such an eco-system can reduce the carbon footprint by up to 85% and save up to 30 tons of CO2 per year. With an innovative water-cooling system and direct heat reuse, this new supercomputer will help to reduce overall energy consumption by 40%. Located at the ETH Zurich, it is planned to start operation in 2010. This is a three-year collaborative research in emission-free high performance computing.

Washing machine that will use just a cup of water to wash

    washing-machine.jpg
The washing machine is probably the one thing that has brought about so much obesity in today’s world because washing clothes is a pain. And the amount of water that’s wasted? Not even a joke. But now you have the option of saving some of that water by uising as little as one cup water for your clothes through a new project done at University of Leeds in Britain. It uses less than 10 per cent of the water of conventional machines and 30 per cent less energy by
replacing most of the water with thousands of tiny reusable plastic beads to attract and absorb dirt under humid conditions. The washing machine will use just a little water and detergent to dampen the clothes, loose the stains and create water vapour that allows the beads to work. These beads can then be used up to a hundred times by storing it in a mesh in the machine’s drum.

Battery-free Light for Life UC3.400 flashlight will last more than a lifetime

    LightForLife_main.jpg
Flashlights certainly rule over the yester-years’ torches and bulbs. The latest to throw light on this gadget’s dependability is Light for Life UC3.400. Coming from Ivus Energy Innovations, this green powerful flashlight is fitted with an exclusive Flashpoint Power technology. This helps to eliminate the need of the batteries and integrates seamlessly with purely ultracapacitor energy storage systems. Based on the same principle akin to the flash in cameras, the ultracapacitors quickly load energy, and then quickly unload it. Capable of recharging in 90 seconds, such a system results in a flash of 90 lumens for 90 minutes per charge. This go-anywhere, anytime light will always be ready, no matter how long it’s been between uses. The 50,000-hour LEDs don’t need to be replaced so calculating that in actual figures it can be recharged once a day for 135 years. An ideal thing to inherit…at least for some!
