New eco-friendly cell phone Nokia Ink 01 made of recycled aluminum

    nokia_ink_01.jpg
After hybrid cars being the talk of the town, now mobile companies are getting interested. Nokia has launched a green phone concept that will be made of recycled aluminum. Engineered by Luis Barcelo the phone is called Nokia Ink 01 and has a very futuristic appeal to it. Idea behind this is to reduce the energy consumption wherever you use your cell phone. A special feature is that it carries an extra low power consumption E-Ink digital display. All parts of the cell phone structure are constructed from recycled aluminum being capable to be constantly recycled while using low energy consumption. The Nokia Inc 01 has its main key pad coming with a capacitive sensor which appears to reduce the amount of separate parts. It is equipped with a mini OLED display that makes it possible for the user to take pictures and revise them while consuming little energy.

Eco Kettle to save water and electricity

    Eco_Kettle.jpg
Most of us tend to fill the kettle to the brim and then heat the water in it to make tea or coffee. This leads to a lot of wastage of water and electricity as we don’t always use up the water we heated. The Eco Kettle is the solution to this eternal problem. This seemingly normal kettle has two water chambers in it. One is the central reservoir that is filled to the brim, and there’s a central valve button in the lid to release only the amount of water you need to the second boiling chamber. This central valve lets you send one to eight cups of water in the boiling chamber and helps you save a considerable amount of water and electricity. Saving energy is a vital need in today’s world and the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in UK stated “If everyone boiled only the water they needed to make a cup of tea instead of ‘filling’ the kettle every time, we could save enough electricity to run practically all the street lighting in the U.K”. The Energy Saving Trust also found that the Eco Kettle used 30% less electricity compared to other kettles.

New Yahoo data center goes green and cools with outside air

yahoo.jpg Yahoo’s plans for a new redesigning of its data center will help the company achieve carbon neutral status without resorting to purchasing carbon offsets. The forthcoming data center lets outside air cool the servers all the time. This idea is based on the design of a chicken coop and Yahoo is planning to get it patented as well. Data centers are very important but they are also high energy consumers which is making big software companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are trying to design them in such a way that they are very energy efficient and less burden on the limited resources of our planet. The new data center is going to be in Lockport, New York which is just outside of Buffalo.

Bug eating LED clock that converts dead carcasses to energy

    Bug_eating_LED_clock.jpg
Brit designers Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger have come up with an amazing way to get rid if Bugs and flies. They have created a LED clock that munches on bugs and then converts their dead bodies to energy to run the clock. This wacky gizmo has a sticky roller covered in flypaper that rolls to drop the dead bugs in a microbial fuel cell. The bacteria then party on the remains of the bug and this chemical changes result in the generation of energy to run the clock. A very innovative but sort of creepy way to keep time I feel.

ZigBee’s Green Power spec allows freedom from battery and grid

ZigBee_logo.jpg All good habits begin from home. So instead of blaming the government and other citizens of this planet for abusing energy consumption, why not equip our own den with ZigBee’s Green Power spec. The company is rolling out an energy-harvesting specification that would enable switches and sensors equipped with its wireless home-control technology to operate without batteries and without a connection to a home’s power lines. This means that ZigBee-enabled on-wall light switches, dimmers, motion detector, moisture sensors and door sensors will be able to harvest energy from small solar cells, from heat or from the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy. To make it simpler, let me explain to you with an example. To put on light, we press a button. This action will be converted into a small electrical charge, which in turn would power an embedded ZigBee transmitter. And the ZigBee signal would then turn on ZigBee-equipped lights.
