Abu Dhabi is all set to exploit a major chunk of the sun’s energy. And how are they planning to do so? By building a colossal concentrating solar power plant! Christened with the Arabic term for the “sun”, the “Shams” is a 100-megawatt project, of which, 40% is owned by Spain’s Abengoa Solar and French oil giant Total SA. Masdar. The remaining 60% of it will be owned by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. Construction of this solar power plant will began this year. So what makes this one different? 768 parabolic mirrors spread across an area of 741 acres of desert land in Madinat Zayed.

The plant will start functioning and juicing the sun by 2012 and will produce enough energy to light up around 62,000 homes. Under a long term contract, the energy generated will be sold to the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company. Hopefully, more power plants like these that generate electricity from the “shams” come up.
