The FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa is all set to be a green affair. Green concepts and technology are being put to use this football world cup. The stadiums get a dash of green too. We came across the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, having its finishing touches being brushed on currently. This massive stadium is as eco-friendly as a stadium can get. The stadium’s sculptured roof gives a harp-like impression, with a 150m high arch. The roof membrane is made of PTFE, which is 50% transparent. This exposes crowd below to natural daylight, though protecting them from any solar harm. The stadium seats 56,000-85,000 people and a 6 storey VIP facility. It’s equipped with water conservation technologies, natural ventilation and is energy efficient. Its energy efficient heating and cooling systems keep the temperatures in the stadium pleasant.

That’s not all. The stadium is also capable of rainwater collection. 30,000 cubic meters of concrete demolition material from the old stadium was used for construction, making this a recycled stadium! With all the efforts put into keeping the Moses Mabhida Stadium clean and green, this one sure is Durban’s pride.
