The Baywatch of Japan portrays a green image as it is reported that Regional Japan Coast Guard offices are resorting to life-saving jackets recycled out of discarded plastic bottles. Along with being easy on environment, such eco-friendly vests are undemanding on the economy too. While the traditional life saver can run up to ¥5,000 ($55) – ¥20,000 ($220), this recycled one costs ¥200 ($2). The Takamatsu Coast Guard Office has placed these lifesavers at three breakwaters in Kagawa Prefecture popular for fishing.

Though such a green life-saver was originally created by an officer at the Wakamatsu Coast Guard Office in Kitakyushu three years ago, the Takamatsu Coast Guard Office was inspired by a group of children who rescued a drowning person with a raft made with 16 plastic bottles.
