• WattStation: Curb-side electric car charger by Yves Behar

Charging up you Electric Vehicle isn’t going to be so much of a pain in the neck as it used to be a few years ago. And we need to thank GE’s hired designer Yves Behar for that. Behar came up with an innovative and simplistic way to charge up EVs in cities, without the need for car-owners to drive up all the way to an EV-charging station every time their clean and green vehicles run out of juice. All you need to now do is, park besides a curb, and hook up to the WattStation, which hopefully will find its place on city sidewalks soon. The charger is designed to juice your EV in just 4 to 8 hours, while the usual chargers we have around today take as long as 12 to 18 hours to charge up.

These should turn up on city sidewalks by 2011. In the meanwhile, designer Behar is busy drawing plans for similar chargers that can be used at home and the office. The WattStation needs just a peek from your window as you drive by and decide if it can be used at a given instant, thanks to its color coded display. This one sure beats the use of gasoline today.
