new and innovative ways to conserve water and other precious natural resources. One is El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa, Taos, New Mexico. It features the “Living Machine,” a water recycling system that is designed to filter waste water through pools that are rich with fish, plants and other natural filters. The end result is reclaimed water that is used to irrigate botanical gardens and landscaping, including herbs, vegetables and exotic fruits that are served at the property’s restaurant. Titanic Spa in Linthwaite, England is photovoltaic panels and a biomass generator burning wood chippings from industry waste are topped up if need be with the purchase of 100 percent renewable energy. Cold water wash is used for all spa linens. There’s no chlorine in the swimming pool—all water used for the pool, steam, and showers is pumped up 330 feet from a borehole original to the mill.

San Francisco’s Epi Center MedSpa is constructed from sustainable materials including eco-friendly paints, recycled fabrics, marble flooring and counter tops, and recycled and FSC-certified wood. It is also energy efficient and conserves resources through water filters that eliminate the need for bottled water, electronic medical charting and digital photography that reduces paper, ink and toner usage. All plumbing fixtures are low flow to promote water conservation, and the lighting reduces energy usage by 70 percent of the amount that would typically be required by the space. Wonder how much these places charge for their spa sessions now.
