Panasonic in deal with MIT for Australia’s Global Green Challenge

    panasonic.jpg
See this is what I call a green marketing campaign. It is sure to win you bills and support and you are also doing a good deed for the environment. Panasonic has taken lead to support a Solar Electric Vehicle Team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their participation of the Global Green Challenge (GGC), which will be held in October in Australia. It will provide the team with its high-capacity (2.9 Ah), lithium-ion batteries to be used in the team’s vehicle. And what’s the best part, Panasonic’s logo will be shining on the body of the vehicle. It’s a fair deal. Panasonic will also provide the same high-capacity, lithium-ion batteries to a team from Japan’s Tokai University, which is also competing in the same category. But that is of course secondary because the world knows the strength of MIT unlike JTU.

    Survival Stove for campers, maybe

    Survival_Stove.jpg
For campers this might be useful, safe equipment. It is the Survival Stove and is made in Canada. It is supposed to be light, compact, and easy to store or carry and leaves very low trace residue, creates no garbage and can be used in very cold weather. It supposedly just uses a few (not specified) AA batteries to create a high cooking heat up to 20,000 of BTU – 1,200°F. It doesn’t use artificial fuels and is safe to store, carry and use. It will also apparently burn any dry fuel material such as wood blocks or chips, natural fibers, dry animal dung, cardboard or charcoal.

Toyota promotes Prius with huge solar-powered flowers across US

    prius-flower.jpg
If you make a trip to the US, you would be amused at these huge and giant flowers across various cities. These are Toyota solar-powered flowers to generate electricity and provide free Wi-Fi for anyone passing by. This is meant to represent the Prius theme of “Harmony between Man, Nature, and Machine,” and is part of Toyota’s national marketing campaign for the third generation Prius launch in 2010. The 18-foot flowers have solar cells behind their petals and at the base of the stem. The generated electricity travels down the stem to plastic green benches with 110-volt outlets. Each of the five flower provide room for up to 10 people to sit while charging their cell phones, laptops and other devices.

Leonardo Di Caprio rides bicycles to pave a green path

    leo_biking_nyc.jpg
Bicycles are known to be the most eco-friendly and economical mode of transport and our celebrities seem to prefer this mode of transport of late. Leonardo Di Caprio was spotted riding a bicycle in London recently when he took a break from the filming of his latest project, Inception. In the past actors like Tobey Macguire, Lukas Haas and Kevin Dillon were spotted riding their bikes in NYC. Just like these celebs are opting for a greener mode of transport, it’s high time their fans take on this fad and ditch their cars for a greener living.

Trash trackers to help dispose responsibly and save planet

    tracking-trash.jpg
Have you always wondered where our trash was going and how much energy it takes to make them disappear? Well now a team of MIT researchers have announced a major project called Trash Track that relies on the development of special electronic tags that will track different types of waste on their journey through the disposal systems of New York and Seattle. The project will monitor the patterns and costs of urban disposal and create awareness of the impact of trash on our environment and will also reveal the last journey of our everyday products. Trash Track was initially inspired by the Green NYC Initiative, the goal of which is to increase the rate of waste recycling in New York to almost 100 percent by 2030.

Houses of Parliament in UK are the least energy efficient

    houses_of_parliament.jpg
Though UK’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown is making noise about the need to reduce global warming at the G8 summit in Italy, he needs to follow the famous adage ‘Practice what you Preach’ for now. DailyMail reports that the Houses of Parliament loses more heat than Buckingham Palace, the Reichstag, Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. Based on a scientific report, it is estimated that the heat lose costs the taxpayer £7,191 ($11,700) a year in wasted energy. An infra red image analysis exhibited quantified C02 loss and heat loss through thermal image. On the color spectrum of thermal imaging, dark/navy colors indicate little or no heat loss, bright yellow indicates the most heat loss while red is the middle of the scale. This patented software quantifies the data in a traditional infra red image to disclose just how “green” key landmark buildings really are. With such a monitoring act, nobody can falsely claim the green status of any architectural structure. Mr. Gordon, are you reading this? If so, then understand that change starts at home!

Sony has cut down on 100,000 tons of CO2 emissions last year

    sony_city.jpg
Sony is continuously working to increase energy efficiency in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As part of this effort, Sony is actively promoting the use of renewable energy. By implementing initiatives such as the Green Power Certification System and the introduction of solar power generation systems, Sony reduced its global CO2 emissions by approximately 100,000 tons in fiscal year 2008. Sony Europe has achieved independent certification that every facility with over 100 employees is powered by 100% renewable energy amounting to 190 million kWh or approximately 55,000 tons worth of CO2 emissions. Sony today purchased Green Power Certificates equivalent to approximately 50% of the electricity to be used at Sony City (Sony’s Headquarters building in Tokyo) beginning October 1, 2009. This represents the entire daytime electricity usage at the building, and is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 4,400 households.

    zero.jpg
This is another one of them green yachts. But this is the first hydrogen powered yacht with a fully integrated laboratory to study pollution in the Mediterranean. The Zero CO2 project can sail using a clean carbon-free auxiliary motor. A scientific platform installed on the yacht by the University Joseph Fourier (UJF) and its technology transfer subsidiary, Floralis, will be used to collect scientific data on man-made pollution throughout the length of the 10 month trip. The yacht will travel around the Mediterranean coast as far as Turkey on a journey that will commence in March, 2010.
