• Windows with transparent solar cells

Windows gives you a good view of your surroundings, but have you heard of your windows capable of producing electricity. Even the facades of the house can harness solar energy to supply the occupants with electrical power. This could very well be the future of domestic electric supply. The surface area used to produce energy would increase greatly with transparent solar cells. Two different transparent coatings are required one to conduct the electricity via electrons known as the n-conductors, and the one in which electron holes enable the electricity to flow, the p-conductors. These coating are produced by doping the base material with few other atoms. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute of Mechanics for Materials IWM are working in cooperation with other Fraunhofer colleagues and have developed material physics models and methods.
