• Bacteria breathing rocks discovered can help produce electricity and clean polluted areas

  • Rock-Breathing.jpg Bacteria breathing rocks or producing electrical energy may have seemed unheard of if not for the findings by scientific researches published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). This research can be used in developing technology like fuel cells and bio-batteries and also clean-up agents that can be used to clean places ridden with oil, toxic waste and uranium. Unlike us, micro-organisms can survive without oxygen and use up minerals of iron to survive. This is said to be common in habitats that lack oxygen supply. These bacteria, as stated by researcher Prof Richardson, construct tiny wires biologically through cell walls. This helps organisms contact and conduct electrons. This can also lead to bacteria releasing charges to the minerals from inside the cell and make electricity! With a development of technology, we will soon be able to produce clean electricity from waste.
